Rehm states “This warm and cozy modified mission-style theater located on the 3rd floor of this stately home in Bedford, New Hampshire was a childhood dream of owners”. Liberty Hill Construction designed and built this space to meet the needs of the client delivering a simple, functional and elegant theater for entertainment. The challenge on this project was to provide the client’s desired atmosphere while retrofitting a complicated HVAC solution, managing ambient light from two skylights in the space, accommodating full theater sounds with no disruption to the adjacent bedrooms, and completing the project within 10 weeks from its conception.

Warm and cozy modified mission style Bedford, NH Theater is located in the 3rd floor of this stately home. This theater was designed to host many types of events. The Home Owners, Wayne and Teri Williams opened the theater with a fund raising reception for a non-profit local health organization serving the community. Many Red Sox and Patriot parties and movie nights in this self contained space. The staircase winds it’s way up to the cozy landing overlooking the great room just outside the entrance to the theater. The goal was to design a theater that was simple but elegant with rich dark cherry millwork and cabinets to match and of course an awesome experience. The cherry cabinets and shallow gentlemen’s standing bar, behind the 2nd row, are topped with granite tops and back splashes. Walls are trimmed out with Classic Dark Cherry with in-laid panels made from acoustic material and stretch woven fabrics. All but the two back surround speakers are hidden in the wall, meeting the Home Owner’s request for the experience not the technology. The boyhood dream of having a movie theater in His home was finally a reality.

The experience was accomplished with an SMX acoustically transparent screen and the center speaker located behind to place the dialog where you would expect without sacrificing image quality. The PSB speakers are hidden in the walls behind acoustic wall panels. This theater gave the two Wow’s they where looking for. The first Wow as you walk in and see the Rich comfortable interior and the second for when the show begins…. Picture first and then the clean, tight, dynamic sound experience that you can listen to all day long without growing tired. And we can’t forget the icy cold beverages and yummy snacks. The rich European leather seats built by Bass Industries where the ones he immediately chose after just one seating.

The plush carpeting is great for the three grandchildren to sit around the lift up cherry table in front of the 1st row. There have been many a performance held by the rising stars as they entertain family and friends with their singing and dancing abilities.

This theater was designed and built with the ability to easily upgrade to the latest technology without having to disrupt the room. The front stage was built in sections so as to remove easily to replace the HVAC systems and access to side walls and wire chases thru removable acoustic insert panels in the custom cherry woodwork. All electronics are housed in a Pull Out Swiveling Middle Atlantic rack with custom laser cut faceplates for all the equipment. An activity based color touch screen remote control with “Watch Movie”, “Watch HD TV” and a “Goodnight” button to make the control of the system simple and easy for all. This theater brings lots of smiles to the happy moviegoers. The best part is that they get to have real butter on their popcorn.

Greg Rehm of Liberty Hill Construction in Bedford earns CAPS Designation https://libertyhillconstruction.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/7/greg-rehm-of-liberty-hill-construction-in-bedford-earns-caps-designation

Providing Safety and Comfort Solutions for Better Senior Living

Bedford, NH, April 28, 2009 – Greg Rehm of Liberty Hill Construction recently became one of a select group of professionals nationwide to earn the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation, identifying Greg as one of the building industry’s top professionals with skills and knowledge specific to home modifications for aging-in-place. Liberty Hill Construction provides a unique approach to the remodeling industry by anticipating the needs of their clients, and recommending the most effective plans for meeting those needs.

“It was important to us that our contractor had all of the necessary credentials,” said (a mature market customer), “We knew so little about the requirements of home building, and what to expect. It was comforting to learn about Liberty Hill and all of the educational requirement they maintain. We always felt safe with our Greg.”

The CAPS program with created by the Remodelers™ Council of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), in collaboration with the NAHB Research Center, NAHB Seniors Housing Council, and the AARP. The CAPS designation program teaches the technical, business management and customer service skills essential to compete in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling industry—home modifications for the mature market.

CAPS was developed to help home remodeling professionals meet the needs of the 77+ million Baby Boomers that will reach retirement age in the first years of the 21st century. The CAPS designation identifies remodelers that have been trained to help retirees and older adults remain in their homes safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of income or ability level, and continue to live in a familiar environment throughout their maturing years.

In three days of coursework, the CAPS curriculum incorporates a variety of information tailored to aging-in-place home modifications, including: background on the older adult population; communication techniques; common aging-in-place remodeling projects; marketing to the aging-in-place market; common barriers and solutions; codes and standards; product ideas and resources; and business management.
CAPS program graduates are required to maintain their designation by attending continuing education programs and/or participating in community service projects. CAPS classes are offered through local and state home building associations and at national trade shows, including NAHB’s International Builder’s Show and the Remodelers’ Show.

Top Five Home Maintenance Projects https://libertyhillconstruction.zenfolio.com/blog/2012/7/top-five-home-maintenance-projects

Manchester, NH , May 2010 – During National Remodeling Month this May, review some tips from professional remodelers on maintaining your greatest investment, your home. Regular home inspection and repair will help maintain the condition of your home and save on costly emergencies in the future.

An informal poll of professional remodelers revealed five tips for maintaining your home to keep it in top condition and support home value. Proper home maintenance should start with a regular inspection of the homes exterior and the heating and cooling system to ensure the home is running smoothly.

  1. Inspect the roof.

An examination of the roof will reveal spots that need repair, preventing leaks that ruin home interiors and valuables. Regular roof maintenance prevents roof problems leading to structural damages and other expensive emergencies.

  1. Add insulation.

Most houses can benefit from installing or repairing the insulation barrier in the home. Adequate attic insulation, in particular, keeps the home from losing energy with wasted heating and cooling. A better insulated home means less work for the heating and cooling system and lower energy bills.

  1. Repaint surfaces.

A fresh coat of paint does wonders for a home by updating the color palette and giving the home a shiny new start. Quality paint jobs also protect surfaces and prevent problems like rotting wood. Consider using no- or low-VOC paints for reducing fumes while drying and keeping the home air quality more comfortable.

  1. Monitor flashing and caulking.

Worn window flashing and caulking allows water to penetrate the walls, causing damage to drywall and framing. Asking a professional to inspect windows can prevent water intrusion, saving thousands in major repairs down the road. Additionally, examine caulking and sealing in bathrooms to ensure water isn’t leaking into walls or floors.

  1. Check the water heater and heating and cooling system.

Waiting until the water heater, furnace, or air-conditioning fails will cost more in emergency repairs. Bring in experts to assess these units to ensure they are functioning and receive needed repairs. Newer water heaters and HVAC systems can increase home efficiency, bringing down water and energy bills.

Outdoor Living

By Erica Thoits

Here in New Hampshire, we know that warm weather is something to be cherished. Come the first borderline spring day until the snow nearly flies, Granite Staters are out and about in their yards gardening, grilling, hosting friends, reading, swimming and generally living in the out of doors as much as possible.

However, we Granite Staters are also all too familiar with nature's problems - mosquitoes, black flies, gnats, rain and the threat of sunburn, to list a few. It's great to have functional outdoor "rooms" where you can cook, lounge and entertain, but when the winged pests descend or the clouds threaten to put a damper on your plans, it's always nice to have a space ready when you need to retreat. A screened-in porch with access to both your outdoor and indoor areas is a great way to experience the best of both worlds. They can have all the comforts of a living room (couch, TV, refrigerator) with the feeling and smells of warm summer air all around.

"The whole outdoor living area has become really popular," says Greg Rehm of Liberty Hill Construction in Bedford. Many homeowners, he adds, are opting to transform existing space into different outdoor areas, rather than committing to building whole new additions.

The home pictured on the opening page is an example of this. Rehm and Liberty Hill Construction took a 12-year-old deck that had begun to crumble and turned it into a grilling/dining area and screened-in porch. They also included a fire pit - another oft-requested item, adds Rehm - and a hot tub that are surrounded by a landscaped back yard where the family's children can play. All of this was completed in six weeks.

The airy screened-in porch (pictured on page 42) offers the family a place to enjoy the outdoors with all the comforts of being inside. With a television, seating area and refrigerator, it's now a three-season living room.

The use of natural wood in porches like this one is a very popular choice, says Rehm. It offers a cozy cabin-like feel while also offering an easier-to-maintain exterior. Natural woods create an almost rustic feeling, setting it apart from the rest of the formal house.

For the Ball family, who owns the home pictured on the opposite page, the goal of this three-month project was to create an outdoor living area that served a number of different purposes - a place for the kids to play, family gathering space and independent areas for entertaining - around the back yard and above-ground pool.

Above all, homeowner Mona Ball says the project was aimed at giving her family a way to comfortably spend time outdoors outside of the pool.

"We wanted a space that was sort of a combination of indoor and outdoor that we could enjoy with families and kids," she says.

The biggest challenge in completing her vision, says Rehm, was building an aesthetically pleasing structure while working with the height of the back of the house and existing landscaping.

The end result is the addition of a multilevel deck with staircases on both sides. The homeowners also added a new screened-in porch (pictured on pages 40-41).

While the project may have been a challenge, Ball says she and her family couldn't be happier with the results.

"We absolutely love it," she says. "It's our favorite room in the house."

Ball says her only complaint is that the room can't be a year-round fixture.

"I wish the warm weather season was longer here so we could enjoy it more," she says. NH
